The United Nations Secretary General Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, visited the Omani capital, Muscat again and met on Tuesday with Omani Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Khalifa Al-Harithi and expressed his deep appreciation for the role played by the Sultanate of Oman, praising its continued support for UN-led peace efforts and its persistent endeavors to create a conducive environment for dialogue and de-escalation.
Grundberg also met with the chief negotiator of the Houthi rebels, Mohammed Abdulsalam, to discuss ways to break the political deadlock and enhance prospects for resuming dialogue.
Throughout his meetings, Grundberg affirmed that the United Nations will continue its active engagement with all parties in support of a return to a comprehensive political process that opens the door to sustainable solutions, meets the aspirations of Yemenis, and at the same time takes regional concerns into account.
Regarding the detention file, the UN envoy, together with the UN official in charge of detainees, Moeen Shreim, addressed the issue of the continued arbitrary detention of UN staff by the Houthi group, renewing the call for their immediate and unconditional release, and emphasizing that the safety and security of UN personnel are a non-negotiable priority.
