UNHCR: Yemen hosts over 60,000 refugees and asylum seekers

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that Yemen hosts over 60,000 refugees and asylum seekers, with 6,500 new arrivals in 2024.

According to UNHCR latest factsheets covering public health support for refugees, asylum seekers, and host communities in 2025, 6,619 refugees and asylum seekers were newly registered, 24,957 documents were issued or renewed, and 766 children were registered under birth procedures. 

The factsheets also outlines that refugee registration and documentation efforts were made to ensure protection, access to services, and identification of vulnerable individuals.

According to the fact sheets UNHCR teams provided 99,331 health consultations, referred 4,100 patients for emergency care, delivered 7,560 mental health sessions, and supported 3,020 refugee women with antenatal care and attended 930 live births.

UNHCR also helped over 8,300 children to be enrolled in primary education, and 7,289 to receive material support. It supported 432 children in secondary education, 129 in tertiary education, and 9 schools with materials and maintenance.

In Kharaz Refugee Camp in Lahj governorate, —the country’s only refugee camp, hosting nearly 9,490 refugees and asylum seekers, mostly from Somalia and Ethiopia, UNHCR helped 2,241 households to reside in the camp In 2025, including 1,340 individuals with specific needs. It helped over 3,000 students to access formal schooling, healthcare, water, sanitation, shelter, and cash assistance.

Nutrition programmes reached over 1,478 children and mothers at risk of malnutrition.

In 2024, According to the fact sheets, UNHCR provided vital services in Basateen, Aden—a neighborhood hosting over 130,000 people, including refugees, asylum seekers, internal displaced people (IDP), and host communities,  such as health care (46,033 consultations), education (2,319 children enrolled), cash assistance (3,695 families), legal aid (879 cases), and supported 1,115 Somali refugees to return home safely.
