The UN Refugee Agency, together with local authorities in Aden, officially broke ground Wednesday on the Al-Arish Wastewater Pumping Station—a landmark project that aims to improve sanitation services, public health, and environmental conditions in one of Yemen’s most densely populated urban areas.

The project is funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Once completed, the Al-Arish station is expected to significantly improve wastewater management and reduce environmental pollution across several districts—bringing tangible benefits to refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities alike.

“This project is a testament to what can be achieved through strong collaboration between humanitarian actors, donors, and local authorities,” said Mr. Mohammad Rafiq Nasry, Head of UNHCR’s Sub-Office in Aden.  He added: “Access to safe sanitation is not only a basic need—it is a foundation for public health, human dignity, and long-term recovery”.

The groundbreaking marks the start of construction and implementation of the Al-Arish Pumping Station, a key part of broader efforts to strengthen essential services and improve living conditions in Aden for communities affected by conflict and displacement.
